So I've been home for a whopping eight months. Oh yes, it's been great to have time to see all my friends and family. But I have also felt very stifled these last few months. It's difficult to move back and deal fully with reverse culture shock, especially when I only intended to be back until August. Not to mention, in Korea, it was almost as if the world was my oyster. In the US, things still are that way technically (many things to do/see), but everything is much more expensive. In efforts to save money, I find myself staying home more often than traveling (at least at this point).
First, let me give you the good news. Tom and I will be departing for Bali, Indonesia on November 18 (or somewhere around then, we haven't purchased our tickets yet). We each got a job teaching at English First, a premier English tutoring school in Indonesia. The market isn't as overwhelming as it is in Korea, so we feel very lucky to have found this job.
"Indonesia? What happened to Morocco?", you say.
Well Tom and I both came home and took our TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) course. We decided to go through Oxford Seminars Certification Program for many reasons, but one being that they guaranteed us job placement when we finished the course. They lied. Without getting into details, let's just say the only service we got after the class was a glorified resume' edit. So it was up to Tom and I to find our own job. And thank god for Tom's determination, because he's the one who scoured message boards and ended up finding this gem for us.
So, Tom is flying to New Orleans on the 15th of November, and soon after we will embark on our new Indonesian life together. It's quite a trek to get over there; the shortest travel time i've seen is 31 hours. blecgh! But once we make that trip, we'll have a few days to relax and unwind from the jet lag. We're going to rent a house, and it looks like we'll be able to afford something quite nice in terms of the typical balinese lifestyle. We'll most likely be living somewhere in the town of Sanur (you can see some google images here). It is known as a relaxing beach, where the black sand and white sand beaches converge. Here is a great blog entry about Sanur. Tom and I will be teaching at different schools, and he will most likely have to commute (via motorcycle/scooter) to Kuta. Kuta is the tourist driven area of the island, busier, but still gorgeous.
We are both so excited about this decision and the new opportunity in front of us. Hopefully I will remember to blog more this time around.
