Today is South Korean Arbor Day! Really, it's the first day of a whole South Korean Tree-Loving Week. So go ahead, hug a tree (you too, republicans).
If you're interested in finding the tree that matches your birthday, here is a handy website:
It is 100% scientific, accurate, and by the books.
The national tree of South Korea is . . . . gingko biloba.
(thanks dad, for the link. and thanks Oscar,
one of my students, for telling me it was "tree day")

"Well, how would you like to have someone come along and pick something off of you?"
Apple Tree, The Wizard of Oz
I went "hiking" yesterday (Sunday). More to come about that later, with pictures.
The weather is getting nicer here. It's been 50-60 degrees the last couple days. Thank god! I spent all of Easter Sunday outside. I was literally just walking to be walking around outside. It was wonderful. I went to the open market again and got lost, and found again, and lost again, but it didn't matter, because all I had to do was hop in a cab and they brought me home. (For $3, you can't really beat that)
Oh and the Cherry Blossom Festival is this weekend! Did you know, that the cherry blossom plant and flower can be eaten. They make tea out of it and drink it at weddings in stead of green tea. But don't eat it in too high a quantity, it has a large dose of coumarin, an ingredient in many anticoagulants. . . . . who knew?
that's a good website for a lot of things. i have it bookmarked, believe me!
It's baseball season. I will have to get some Hanwha Eagles gear. They're the local team in Daejeon. All my students think they are very good, so we'll have to see. These are the same students who thought Chinatown was in China, and that Koreans invented hopscotch (apparently it was the British).
ok, sorry for no real pictures. i promise to post some tomorrow.
hope everyone had a great Easter weekend! and if you had spring break, you are now my mortal enemy. (i kid, i kid)
Now watching: Couples Retreat don't judge me, it's mindless and easy to watch
